What are the ways of hacking a flash drive?

When a flash drive is hacked, can that be done remotely from another computer when the flash drive is plugged in, or do you have the have the flash drive to hack into it. Also, when a flash drive is hacked into, does that mean to control it, to gain access, or to guess the password?
