How do you use a usb flash drive or external hard drive in safe mode?

My computer constantly crashes when I start it up normally, but in safe mode, it works fine. I'm trying to save all of my data before reformatting my hard drive. The problem is that my computer doesn't detect the usb flash drive or external hard drive in safe mode. How do you use a usb flash drive or external hard drive in safe mode? Thanks.

  1. You can't. In safe mode, the USB system isn't loaded at all. I'd recommend downloading a Linux LiveCD such as Knoppix, and using that to copy the data to an external disk instead.
  2. When a pc is restarted after it crashes or hangs, press F8 and select last configuration that worked. Now are you sure that reinstalling the OS will solve the problem? Just asking.
  3. The usb drivers aren't loaded in safe mode. So you won't be able to use your external hard drive
