How do I enable 8GB USB flash memory on Windows Vista home laptop?

I bought an 8GB USB flash memory stick from Microcenter in Georgia. However, my Lenovo laptop with Windows vista home would not recognize the drive when it is connected through USB port. Why is this and how do I enable the use of it on my laptop? Should I update the windows vista to use 8GB memory falsh drive? The memory stick itself didn't come with any driver to install.
