Portable Memory Sticks

When I copy files to my usb flash drive all that I see are weird characters, why?

I bought an 8G usb flash drive on Ebay. Sometimes when I copy files to it, it looks as though the files are on the drive but when I connect it to a computer all that's there are weird characters and no files. What causes this?

1. try formattting it i would recommend formatting with NTFS because in FAT u cannot copy a single file more than 4 GB
